NDSU provides data storage for Dickinson State - NDSU News ...

NDSU provides data storage for Dickinson State

Published: 31 August 2012 11:00 AM

With efforts ongoing to boost efficiencies statewide, NDSU?s Information Technology Division has entered into a service-level agreement to provide 3 terabytes of backup data storage for Dickinson State University.

In April, Todd Hauf, DSU?s director of computer services, approached Marc Wallman, NDSU?s interim vice president for information technology, about providing offsite data storage for disaster recovery purposes.

?As part of our formal disaster recovery plan, we were looking for an offsite location for backup storage,? Hauf said. ?We?ve been aware of the IT services and support that NDSU offers for a number of years. After looking at outside vendors, we determined that NDSU would be able to offer us the data storage service we need at a fair price.?

Galen Mayfield, interim assistant vice president for enterprise computing and infrastructure at NDSU, said that his team saw the project as a mutually beneficial opportunity to extend current resources in support of another state institution. ?This is an efficient use of resources,? he said. ?Given that NDSU already has a robust storage architecture in place, we can use our resources to serve other campuses and save them the cost of developing such a service.?

Hauf consulted with the North Dakota University System chief information officer?s office and decided to move forward with the project in June. NDSU and DSU negotiated a one-year service-level agreement for 3 terabytes of storage. After testing the data transfer process between the two campuses, the requested storage space was made available for use beginning Aug. 1.

Mayfield explained that IT Division staff are typically able to provision data storage within hours or days of a request. However, the timeline regarding the DSU storage project was expanded to allow for thorough testing of data transfer speed and bandwidth usage given the geographical distance between the two campuses.

?During testing, we started out by transferring a small amount of data in order to find the rate of speed for the transfer, which Dickinson State found acceptable,? Mayfield said. That speed topped out at around 40 megabytes per second, according to Greg Wettstein, NDSU?s principal IT engineer. After testing the speed of the transfer, NDSU and DSU staff monitored DSU?s connection to the North Dakota Statewide Technology Access for Government and Education network to make sure that the amount of data being transferred would not congest the network.

The network provides broadband connectivity among all state agencies, colleges and universities, local government and K-12 institutions. Hauf said his team has scheduled the daily backup data transfer process late at night to avoid using too much of the network?s bandwidth during peak traffic hours.

NDSU has been building its data storage services for on-campus departments and external constituencies since 1999. Currently, NDSU?s storage architecture has a capacity of more than 80 terabytes. On-campus departments receive a base amount of storage for shared use, with the option to purchase more as needed. NDSU faculty and staff also have the option to request individual storage at no cost. Mayfield said the NDSU IT Division is looking into increasing the base levels of storage offered to departments and individuals.?

NDSU is capable of providing data storage for institutions located anywhere across the state, regionally, nationally and even internationally. ?This is a great example of opportunities that exist for public institutions in North Dakota to collaborate, reduce costs, and provide greater benefit to faculty, staff and students,? Wallman said.

For more information about data storage and other services, including server hosting and application development, please contact the NDSU IT Help Desk at 1-8685 or ndsu.helpdesk@ndsu.edu.

NDSU is recognized as one of the nation's top 108 public and private universities by the Carnegie Commission on Higher Education.

HBO Takes On Netflix In The Nordics, With Its Own Streaming Video Service

hbo_logo-300x300HBO is going to launch its first significant over-the-top offering, and it's going to do so in one of the same markets as Netflix. The service, called HBO Nordic, will be launched in Denmark, Sweden, Norway, and Finland in mid-October, and could provide some interesting competition to Netflix, which will also soon be entering that region. HBO Nordic is a joint venture between Home Box Office and Parsifal International, which will help bring the company's original programming to the region. Viewers in the Nordic states will have multiple ways of getting HBO Nordic: it will launch a premium, 24-hour live channel that will be distributed through local TV providers. But HBO Nordic will also be available direct to consumers as an on-demand, over-the-top video offering that will cost less than ?10 per month.

Softer fast food restaurant lighting and music can cut calorie intake 18 percent

ScienceDaily (Aug. 28, 2012) ? 0mYour mood for food can be changed by a restaurant's choice of music and lighting, leading to increased satisfaction and reduced calorie intake, according to a new study.

"When we did a makeover of a fast-food restaurant, we found that softer music and lighting led diners to eat 175 fewer calories and enjoy it more," said the study's lead author, Brian Wansink, professor of marketing and director of Cornell University's Food and Brand Lab.

Wansink and his co-author, Koert van Ittersum of the Georgia Institute of Technology, found that softening the lighting and music in fast-food restaurants didn't change what people ordered, but it caused them to eat 18 percent less of what they ordered -- 775 calories instead of 949. They also rated the food as more enjoyable. The results are posted online in the journal Psychological Reports.

The Wansink-Ittersum study counters the popular notion that people who dine in a relaxed environment, with soft lighting and mellow music, will order more food and eat more than those in a more typical dining environment.

"These results suggest that a more relaxed environment increases satisfaction and decreases consumption," Wansink said. "This is important information for fast-food restaurants, which are often accused of contributing to obesity: Making simple changes away from brighter lights and sound-reflecting surfaces can go a long way toward reducing overeating -- and increase their customers' satisfaction at the same time."

$21M awarded in torture suit against ex-Somali PM

McLEAN, Va. (AP) ? A U.S. judge on Tuesday awarded $21 million to seven people who sued a former prime minister of Somalia now living in Virginia, claiming he tortured and killed his own people more than two decades ago.

The judgment against Mohamed Ali Samantar, 76, of Fairfax comes at the end of an eight-year legal battle that went to the U.S. Supreme Court.

Seven Somali natives filed the lawsuit in 2004 in federal court in Alexandria against Samantar, who served as vice president, defense minister and prime minister throughout the 1980s under dictator Siad Barre, until the months before the regime collapsed in 1991.

The suit claimed Samantar personally ordered the killings and torture of members of the minority Isaaq clan.

Samantar denied the accusations and claimed immunity from the lawsuit. On the day the trial was to begin, he entered a default judgment. While he accepted legal liability for the killings, he denied wrongdoing.

One of the plaintiffs, Aziz Deria of Bellevue, Wash., said Tuesday that the ruling vindicates efforts to hold Samantar accountable.

"The case was never about money," said Deria, who has little expectation of recovering his $3 million share of the judgment against Samantar, who is bankrupt. "This case was about having an opportunity to be in court with Samantar and prove he was in charge of what was happening."

Samantar's lawyer, Joseph Peter Drennan, said he will appeal the ruling. In fact, the case is already on appeal. The 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals is considering whether Samantar was properly denied immunity.

The case, first filed in 2004, has had a tortuous path through the courts. At first, U.S. District Judge Leonie Brinkema dismissed the case, ruling that Samantar enjoyed legal immunity as a former foreign official. But the U.S. Supreme Court rejected that argument. Eventually, the State Department argued in a legal filing that Samantar could not claim immunity because Somalia had no central government that could claim immunity on his behalf.

Brinkema then allowed the case to go to trial. Samantar's lawyer objected, saying the judge was granting excessive deference to the State Department ? Brinkema had said she would have dismissed the case if the agency determined it could harm international relations.

After Samantar defaulted at the outset of the trial in February, the trial proceeded without him.

During the shortened trial, the plaintiffs presented evidence including a 1989 BBC interview in which Samantar acknowledged a leadership role in the bombing of Hargeisa, a city in the northern part of the country. Hargeisa was home to a large Isaaq population and a stronghold of a regional movement to break off from Somalia.

The evidence also included testimony from an army colonel who said he overheard a series of radio communications in which Barre was urging moderation in a bombing campaign, while Samantar advocated a harsher attack.

Several plaintiffs ? some who live in the U.S. like Deria and others who still live in Somalia ? told chilling stories of narrowly escaping summary execution, suffering beatings and spending years in solitary confinement in jail. Deria sued on behalf of his brother and father, who were killed.

The San Francisco-based Center for Justice and Accountability, which represented the plaintiffs, said Brinkema's ruling is the first anywhere in the world to hold a leader in the Barre regime responsible for the crimes it perpetrated.

"This is a remarkable result for our clients, who faced down one of the most powerful men in their country's history and forced him to concede liability for his crimes," said Steven Schulman, one of the plaintiffs' lawyers.

But Drennan said Samantar continues to deny wrongdoing, and believes that efforts to hash out these claims in a U.S. court are counterproductive to the efforts to promote reconciliation and a cohesive national government in Somalia.

The lawsuit "needs to be seen for what it is ? politics and clan warfare in the courtroom," Drennan said.

Deria, on the other hand, said holding Samantar formally accountable for atrocities in Somalia's civil war is the best way for Somalia to move forward. He said that clan retribution can be set aside when people can be assured of justice through the legal system and that he hopes the case can highlight to the Somali people that justice is attainable.

"This is the civilized way of dealing with criminals," he said.

The last vacation you'll ever take

So, my idea is pretty simple but it could be fun.

You will all be playing as customers or staff on a cruise ship set out from Key Largo on a round trip voyage around the world with multiple stops at some of the world's most popular vacation places. Somewhere along the line, a beast of unknown nature sneaks aboard, be it a Vampire stowing away, a newly infected werewolf returning to their voyage, or some other type of creature?

So like I said, it's pretty simple. But the good news for you is, on top of accepting player applications, I'm also accepting monster suggestions. Anyone who can suggest a monster that I like the most for this will get to play it as a character.

Eh? Ehhh?

Video shows Turkish reporter held in Syria

ISTANBUL (AP) ? Turkish television has broadcast a video of a Turkish journalist who is reportedly being held in Syrian government captivity.

NTV television on Monday showed the video of Cuneyt Unal, a cameraman who was working for the U.S.-funded al-Hurra network when he and a colleague, Bashar Fahmi, were believed to have been captured while covering fighting in the northern city of Aleppo a week ago.

Turkey's Anadolu news agency says the video was first broadcast on a pro-regime television station in Syria.

On the video, Unal has bruises under his eyes. He says he crossed into Syria with foreign militants, and one image shows him holding a weapon. Turkey's Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu says Unal was coerced into making a statement and that Syria is responsible for his wellbeing.

Dispatches From the Republican National Convention

Finally this thing is getting under way. I know that this is just a show, but I love political conventions: the theater, the ridiculous partisanship, but mostly the fact that the debate is entering a new phase where what happens in the day-to-day of a campaign might be a little less ephemeral. It might be a ridiculous hope, but for the moment I hold on to it. It may turn to mush by the time I finish typing this right here.?

"He hasn't ever run a company," Reince Priebus, the chairman of the GOP, is saying behind me about the president. "He hasn't even run a garage sale or the inside of a lemonade stand." That's also true of Paul Ryan, but never-mind the message of the night: Barack Obama doesn't know the first thing about business. That?s their message, and they're going with it. I think of those kinds of charges as a waste of time in a sense. They fire up the base, every voter will hear them, but what I'm looking for is a thought or insight that might wriggle out of this building into the light of the campaign. ?

Tonight, the big prime time speakers will be New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and Ann Romney. Romney's advisers say that his wife will talk about "love." Romney is likely to show up in some fashion. Fortunately I think we know that we will be spared all the saliva of the big kiss that Al Gore gave Tipper at his convention in 2000. The other moment on my mind is the time in 1996 when Elizabeth Dole was walking through the crowd like Oprah and her husband appeared on the screen behind her. He waved and then no one was quite sure what should come next. "What do I do now?" Elizabeth Dole asked before moving on.?

Romney's staffer says Ann Romney's speech is amazing?which seems like an unnecessary raising of expectations?but ?it's clear she has material that can pull on the heart strings.?Ann Romney has had a brutal set of physical challenges and she'll talk about that tonight. She has MS, is a breast cancer survivor, and has had multiple?miscarriages.?Ann Romney talked about her miscarriages recently in an interview with Scott Pelley. It was more than she had said before. These conventions tend to focus on the crucible moments to show us a side of candidates we haven't seen before. Remember in 1992 when Al Gore told the wrenching story of his son nearly being killed in a car accident. In 1996 he talked about his sister's cancer death. So the nominee?s wife will have to go a long way to match that mix of the personal and the political.?

I'm listening for the word "trust" from Ann Romney. The message is: I trust Mitt Romney and you should too.

Red Velvet Cupcakes : The Healthy Chef ? Teresa Cutter

Red Velvet Cupcakes

Posted by Teresa Cutter on Monday, August 27, 2012 ? 7 Comments?

This is my healthy take on the traditional red velvet chocolate cake. ?It?s lovely and moist from the fresh grated beetroot that i?ve added into my cupcake batter and it replaces the traditional red food colouring found in traditional recipes. I?ve thrown in a handful of raisins to add a touch more sweetness and it marries well with the cocoa and cinnamon. You can also add prunes in place of the raisins that provide a lower glycemic response and suited for more mature palettes. The final cupcake looks wholesome and healthy, quite rustic actually which I really love. I enjoyed them topped simply with a spoonful of thick Greek style yoghurt, but check out my frosting recipes below to choose the one that suits you ! ?If you?re entertaining, then adding a few raspberries over the top will add another amazing flavour sensation.

What?s good about it:
Beetroots are packed with phytonutrients called betalains that provide antioxidant and anti-inflammatory support to the body. Dark chocolate is associated with a reduced risk for heart disease, stroke, and diabetes according to studies from the British Medical Journal.?Chocolate contains compounds that act as stimulants believed to boost serotonin and endorphin levels in the brain.? It contains the stimulants theobromine and caffeine that can increase alertness and give you a pleasurable sensation similar to the high people get after exercise. Egg and almonds are packed with protein your body needs to help it repair as well as support a healthy immune system.

260 g ( about 2 large/ 9 oz) ) beetroot, grated raw with skin
2 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla extract or paste
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
Pinch of sea salt
150 g (1? ? cups/ 5 ?1/4 oz) ground almonds or almond meal
? cup ?or 3 tablespoons cocoa powder or raw cacao powder
3 tablespoons your choice (macadamia oil, olive oil, coconut oil, avocado oil) or melted butter
? cup (60 ml) ?honey or pure maple syrup
? cup raisins or prunes chopped (optional but lovely)
1 teaspoon gluten free baking powder or 1/4 teaspoon bicarb soda or baking soda

Preheat your oven to 160 C. (320 F) fan forced or 180 C (356 F) no fan.
Combine raw beetroot, eggs, vanilla, cinnamon, ground almonds, cocoa, honey, raisins or prunes if using and baking powder into a large bowl.
Mix well with your hands until combined.
Spoon into paper lined cupcake or small muffin tins.
Bake for 45 minutes or until cooked through.
Remove from the oven and cool completely in the tin.
Serve alone or topped with your desired flavoured frosting (see below for frosting recipes)

NB: I love to serve mine simply with thick vanilla, Greek Style yoghurt.
Serve topped with raspberries which add that extra layer of deliciousness to the eating experience.
For those who want to use a wholemeal spelt flour 1 cup should replace the almond meal. ?You will need to add another 1/4 your choice of oil or butter to the recipe.

Remove from the heat and cool in the fridge. ?Once cold place into a blender and blend until smooth and creamy?add a little splash of milk or even coconut milk if you want a creamy consistency. This is based on a blancmange style custard cream recipe.

3 For yummy cashew nut cream combine 1 cup of raw cashew nuts or macadamia nuts with 1/2 cup of water or orange juice and a little vanilla. Blend in a good high speed blender until smooth and creamy.

4 To make the vanilla soy cream, combine in a high speed blender like a Vitamix 300 g silken tofu with 2 teaspoons honey and 2 teaspoons natural vanilla extract.? Process until smooth and creamy.? For a thicker cream, add 50 g cashew nuts and process until creamy.

Five things to watch at the Republican Convention

Will Hurricane Isaac, Sarah Palin, or Joe Biden be the biggest gate crasher at the GOP convention in Tampa? And who could steal the show as a speaker? Here?s a brief look at what could be a wild week in Tampa.

1. What?s up with potential Hurricane Isaac?

The current Tropical Storm Isaac is heading toward the Gulf of Mexico after cruising over Cuba and possibly hitting southern Florida this weekend.

The only experts who are as occasionally off-base as political pundits are meteorologists, so the drama over Isaac could linger into Monday.

If you are a weather geek, the smart money is on the European model over the GFS model, but the two popular weather predictors seem close to agreeing that Isaac is likely heading toward the area of western Florida?s border with Alabama. Tampa will be affected but a convention washout isn?t likely.

2. Who is the biggest gate crasher?

That would seem to be Vice President Joe Biden, who was scheduled to lead rallies in Tampa on Monday and Tuesday, at least before Isaac came on the scene.

Sarah Palin wasn?t invited to speak at the Republican National Convention, and she is not on the list of speakers at an official Tea Party rally on Sunday headlined by Herman Cain and Michele Bachmann.

Palin?s PAC reportedly booked hotel space in Tampa, but that was before the former Alaska governor decided not to attend the convention. It remains to be seen if she will appear in Tampa.

Todd Akin,? the controversial Senate candidate from Missouri, was also reportedly in Tampa this week to meet with fundraisers, but he agreed to not attend the convention after last weekend?s media frenzy.

3. Will Chris Christie steal the show as the keynote speaker?

The boisterous New Jersey governor says he?s not changing his style for his keynote speech. But there is plenty of other speaker firepower in Tampa.

Ted Cruz, the up-and-coming Senate candidate from Texas, will get a lot of attention. And Marco Rubio, the current U.S. senator from Florida, is another dynamic speaker.

Cruz is speaking Monday night, while Rubio is speaking on Thursday night just before Mitt Romney. Christie speaks on Tuesday.

But Wednesday night should be the most dynamic night for speakers, with a lineup that includes John McCain, Jeb Bush, Luis Fortuno, Tim Pawlenty, Condoleezza Rice, and Paul Ryan.

Look for Condoleezza Rice to steal the night with her well-honed speech on returning America to its values and promise.

4. Will the party walk the plank with its platform?

Because of Todd Akin?s miscues about rape in a TV interview, the GOP?s stance on abortion will get a lot of attention as it is codified in the convention?s platform.

The platform is approved at the convention?s start. It is expected to disavow a legal exception for rape or incest victims in abortion situations. That would conflict with Mitt Romney?s view on the issue.

But a report from Fox News on Friday listed some other platform highlights, such as a commission to study the gold standard and some conciliatory language on immigration.

The platform isn?t a binding a document for Romney and Paul Ryan, and there?s a lot of debate if voters really care about it.

One voter who doesn?t is Chris Christie, who told a New York radio station that the platform isn?t a big deal.

?I don?t really care about the platform. And I don?t think most Republicans care about the platform. And I don?t think most Republicans can tell you what the platform said,? Christie said.

5. How much of the convention will be on TV?

In past decades, a lot of the convention was televised live. But in the 24/7 news era, where the convention appears on television is an issue.

You?ll be able to watch most of the convention live on cable news networks and online.

But the major broadcast TV networks plan to show limited coverage on three nights, with ABC, CBS, and NBC showing one hour on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. The networks are skipping Monday night.

The GOP might move Ann Romney?s speech to Tuesday, from its scheduled spot as the final speech on Monday, to get her some time on broadcast TV.

The networks are claiming they can only show three nights of coverage, since the Democratic convention only has three nights of events, and there is a fairness issue involved.

Skeptics say the networks gain more financially from showing repeat episodes of TV programming like Castle or Grim than showing Monday?s convention.

The X-factor is the presence of potential Hurricane Isaac on Monday, which could expand a lot of coverage of events in Tampa.

Isaac passes Haiti, heads toward Cuba, Florida

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (AP) ? Tropical Storm Isaac swept across Haiti's southern peninsula early Saturday, dousing a capital city prone to flooding and adding to the misery of a poor nation still trying to recover from the terrible 2010 earthquake.

The storm was heading toward eastern Cuba and forecasters said it poses a threat to Florida Monday and Tuesday, just as the Republican Party gathers for its national convention in Tampa. The U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami said a hurricane warning is in effect for the Florida Keys and for the west coast of Florida from Bonita Beach south to Florida Bay.

At least three people were reported dead. A woman and a child died in the town of Souvenance, Sen. Francisco Delacruz told a local radio station. A 10-year-old girl died in Thomazeau when a wall fell on his, said Marie Alta Jean-Baptiste, director of Haiti's Civil Protection Office.

She said as many as 5,000 people were evacuated because of flooding.

Many, however, stayed and suffered. The sprawling seaside shantytown of Cite Soleil was among the areas that flooded.

"From last night, we're in misery," said Cite Soleil resident Jean-Gymar Joseph. "All our children are sleeping in the mud, in the rain."

More than 50 tents in a quake settlement collapsed, forcing people to scramble through the mud to try to save their belongings.

Forecasters said Isaac could dump as much as eight to 12 inches (30 centimeters) and even up to 20 inches (51 centimeters) on Hispaniola, which is shared by Haiti and the Dominican Republic, as well as produce a storm surge of up to 3 feet (0.9 meters).

Isaac was centered about 95 miles (150 kilometers) east-southeast of Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, early Saturday, with maximum sustained winds of 60 mph (95 kph). It was moving northwest at 14 mph (22 kph). Tropical force winds extended nearly 200 miles (321 kilometers) from the storm's center.

Forecasters said the storm was likely to march up the Gulf of Mexico, offshore of Florida's west coast, as a hurricane on Monday, just as the Republican National Convention is scheduled to start. Tampa was within the storm's possible strike zone, but the most likely course would carry it toward landfall on the Florida Panhandle late Tuesday or early Wednesday.

Cuba declared a state of alert Friday for six eastern provinces and five central provinces were put on preliminary watch. Vacationers in tourist installations of those regions were evacuated.

State television began an all-day transmission of news about the storm on Saturday.

Radio Baracoa, from the city of Baracoa on the northern coast of eastern Cuba, reported that high seas began topping the city's seawall Friday night. Reports said lower than normal rains had left reservoirs well below capacity and in good shape to absorb runoff.

Cuba has a highly organized civil defense system that goes door-to-door to enforce evacuations of at-risk areas, largely averting casualties from storms even when they cause major flooding and significant damage to crops.

In Port-au-Prince, a city of some 3 million ringed by mountains, authorities and aid workers tried to evacuate people from a tent camp to temporary shelters.

More than a hundred people were at a shelter in a school that President Michel Martelly toured Friday, but after the visit some people began to leave.

"They dragged me from the camp and brought me here," 38-year-old Marlene Charles, thirsty and hungry, said about the aid groups. "There's no way I'm going to spend the night here."

In the Dominican Republic, authorities evacuated people from low-lying areas but, as in Haiti, they encountered resistance. Still, authorities said they evacuated nearly 2,900 people. The majority were transferred to the homes of relatives while about 300 were sent to government shelters.

Flooding was reported in Santo Domingo and Santiago but no reports of injuries.

Organizers of next week's Republican National Convention in Tampa were monitoring storm developments, and authorities said there were no plans to cancel the convention.

Out in the eastern Atlantic, former Tropical Storm Joyce degenerated into a weak low pressure system Friday.

Moleskine works with Evernote on scannable notebooks

9 hrs.

A new collaboration between notebook maker Moleskine and media syncing app Evernote is a good example of analog and digital in harmony instead of conflict.?

The product announced Friday is a special line of notebooks designed specifically to work with the Evernote, a service and an?app that, among other things, syncs documents and media between devices. The app allows you to take a picture of a page of text and art and have it automatically adjusted and scanned for text; the new notebooks have a special dotted rule that Evernote claims is optimized for their image processing.

In addition to the scanning feature, which is useful but not limited to Moleskine products, the notebooks will come with several pages of small stickers which, when scanned by the app, will add tags and other functions to the resulting document. For instance, in digitizing a few pages of logo designs, a check-mark sticker could be placed next to the best one, making it easy to find and link to online.

Moleskine's CEO, Arrigo Berni, spoke with NBC News regarding other crossovers between Moleskin's analog?paper world and the fast-moving digital one.

Berni?confirmed that the company is looking into adding further functionality to the Moleskine ecosystem; when asked about other services and partners that Moleskine might be interested in working with, he said "there certainly will be" other partnerships in the "future." For example, he aid,?Moleskine is "working with a print-on-demand company" to enable the movement of digital to analog, just as the Evernote partnership enables the opposite.

But regarding tie-ins and co-branding, Berni is cautious. For items like cases for phones and tablets, the problem is mainly technical: "The challenge for us on that front is keeping up with the pace of innovation in the industry," especially since companies like Apple don't like to share?details of new products?beforehand. "What we've decided to do now is to design cases?that?are versatile enough to fit multiple tablets," he said.

Moleskine?created an iPad app some time ago, and a?new version just went live Friday?that Berni believes is a?major plus, improving the look and adding Evernote syncing. But as for making or branding their own device??

"We've given it some thought in passing ? but you have to be careful," he said. "With Moleskine you're dealing with a very small brand." What people seek in Moleskine products is what Berni called "the intangible dimension: the aesthetics, the design, the culture." Trying to stretch that too far can dilute the brand and frustrate consumers.

Berni noted?that the nature of content creation was changing, though, with powerful digital?tools increasingly supplanting pen, paper?and brush ? "it's not a matter of if, it's a matter of when," he said. But as the company demonstrates, digital and analog don't have to exist entirely?separate from each other, and it's happy to be working on tools that help bridge that divide.

The new "Smart Notebooks" are available for pre-order?in gridded or ruled versions on Moleskine's website, and?buying one will get you access to Evernote's premium services for three months. A pocket-sized version will run you $25, and a larger one goes for $30.?

PR consultant: More Harry photos may emerge soon

LONDON (AP) ? Brace yourself, Harry.

Britain's most prominent public relations guru said Friday he'd been approached by two women who want to sell their photos of Prince Harry, suggesting that the world may soon be seeing more of the unusually exposed British royal.

In comments to BBC television, Max Clifford said he had been approached by two American women who claim they were in the prince's hotel room in the U.S. last week. Clifford, a savvy operator famous for negotiating kiss-and-tell interviews, said the women were trying to sell their photographs ? but that he had turned them down.

"Two people at that party came to me and asked me, would I represent them? Would I sell their photos?" he said. "I said 'no.'"

Harry was photographed romping in the nude during a party at his Las Vegas hotel suite. The pictures ? published by celebrity gossip site TMZ earlier this week ? have caused a global stir. Many Britons have laughed off the 27-year-old prince's hijinks, but questions have been raised about the prince's publicly-funded security detail.

On Thursday, TMZ claimed that "several girls" had taken pictures at the party using their cell phones as the party got started and that "more photos were taken" after the clothes came off. Neither TMZ nor Clifford has made clear whether they believe the unreleased photographs show the prince in the nude.

Clifford has been a key player in many of Britain's biggest tabloid scandals, but said he turned the women away because he could not justify the sale to himself. British publications have largely steered clear of the photographs, with the prominent exception of Rupert Murdoch's The Sun tabloid, which became the first paper to splash the pictures across its front page on Friday with the words: "HEIR IT IS!" and marketing the grainy photograph as a "souvenir printed edition."

The paper said it had defied the wishes of the royal family because there was a public interest in knowing what the prince ? who represented the queen at the 2012 Olympic Games and is heavily involved in charity work ? got up to abroad.

Privacy lawyer Chris Hutchings said that the paper's public interest argument could have traction.

"The public interest argument is on the basis that Prince Harry represents this country around the world and the photos bring into question his suitability to act as a British ambassador," Hutchings said, although he added: "The Sun have taken a calculated risk in publishing the photos given their inherently private nature."

Elisabeth Murdoch, Murdoch's daughter, said she supported The Sun's decision.

Speaking at the International Television Festival in Edinburgh, the Scottish capital, she said she felt bad for the prince, but that the photos were already all over the Internet.

"It would be very sad if we lived in a world where we can't publish that picture," she said.

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) ? Republican National Convention officials say Mitt Romney's wife, Ann, will be speaking during prime-time television coverage of the event.

The presumptive Republican nominee said Friday that he was "disappointed" that the networks weren't planning to broadcast more of the convention.

"I know a number of the networks are looking to put money to the bottom line and they might not think that three hours or four hours of broadcasting a convention makes economic sense for them," Romney said. "But this is an important time for our nation."

Romney, in a radio interview on "The Hugh Hewitt Show," said his wife's convention speech is finished. But his speech is "still a work in progress."

Mrs. Romney is a key surrogate in a race where women voters are fiercely sought after by Romney and Democratic President Barack Obama.

Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, a rising national figure in the party, had offered to give up his slot speaking Thursday for Mrs. Romney, who was scheduled to speak on Monday, the convention's opening night. Broadcast television networks were not planning to cover Monday's proceedings in Tampa.

However, the freshman senator and tea party favorite will keep his Thursday slot, and address the convention in his home state just before Romney closes the convention with his acceptance speech.

Working hoverbike recalls Luke Skywalker's landspeeder

Rowan Hooper, news editor

rexfeatures_1824527a.jpg

(Image: KeystoneUSA-ZUMA/Rex Features)

Although strictly speaking this is more like a speeder bike used by imperial stormtroopers on the forest moon Endor, we think this photo invokes the more innocent pleasures afforded by Luke Skywalker's landspeeder, which he used on the desert planet Tatooine.

But enough sci-fi indulgence. Aerofex, an aerospace company in California, has released images and video of its working prototype hover bike. According to the website Innovation News Daily, rotors on the underside of the vehicle provide lift, and the pilot controls the bike by leaning to the left and right (much as a regular bike might work).

Sadly, it seems the company does not plan to market this bike for the public: it intends to develop it as a pilot-less drone.

A grand jury in U.S. District Court returned an indictment against Floyd Lee Corkins II, 28, of Herndon, Va., U.S. Attorney Ronald Machen Jr. said in a statement with James McJunkin, assistant director of the FBI's Washington field office, and Washington Police Chief Cathy Lanier.

On August 15, Corkins walked into the Family Research Council, which lobbies against same-sex marriage, and told the guard, "I don't like your politics," according to court documents.

"The defendant retrieved a firearm from his backpack, pointed it at the security guard, and opened fire, striking the guard in the arm," Machen said in the press statement.

"After being wounded, the guard moved toward the defendant, wrestled the firearm away, and subdued him," the statement added.

Corkins was indicted on a single federal offense of interstate transportation of a firearm and ammunition, which carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison.

He also was indicted on two District of Columbia offenses, including assault with intent to kill while armed and possession of a firearm during a crime of violence. The former carries a mandatory minimum of five years in prison and a maximum of 30 years. The latter carries a mandatory minimum of five years in prison and a maximum of 15 years.

Corkins, who has been in custody since his arrest after the shooting, was scheduled to appear in court on Friday for an arraignment and detention hearing.

Authorities said Corkins, a volunteer at a Washington gay and lesbian community center, was carrying Chick-fil-A sandwiches at the time of the midmorning shooting. The fast-food chain's president has publicly opposed gay marriage.

J.P. Duffy, spokesman for the Family Research Council, said the group had no immediate comment on the indictment.
