The nonprofit Susan G. Komen organization is using QR codes through March to help raise funds for breast cancer research. The QR codes are part of their marketing campaign called ?Susan G. Komen Passionately Pink for the Cure? campaign.
The QR codes can currently be found in print ads in Marie Claire magazine. Mobile Commerce Daily quoted Brian Penrod, manager of interactive media at Susan G. Komen for the Cure, Dallas, as saying, ?We want to be where the consumers are and provide easy access to breast health and breast cancer information. As a nonprofit, all actions whether on web or mobile, should always provide an option to donate.?
When consumers scan the QR codes, they?ll be taken to the Susan G. Komen mobile site where they can watch a video that details the Passionately Pink campaign. Consumers will be able to easily donate from their smartphones, sign up to get more information about fundraising opportunities, and access links to social media accounts for the organization.
Says Penrod, ?Along with driving people to komen.org, we wanted to provide users on the go the ability to easily access the campaign [information]. The mobile site plays a large role and will become more important the more we have mobile campaigns through future applications and text message campaigns.?

A study published by the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine reverses some earlier thinking that breastfeeding by mothers with asthma might increase the child's risk for the disease. The study found breastfeeding strengthens children's lungs, even if the mother has asthma. Here are details about breastfeeding and lung health in children.
* Asthma is the most common chronic childhood illness, says the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology. Nine million children younger than 18 have been diagnosed with asthma. One in 10 school-age children has asthma and it is the third-leading cause of hospitalization in kids.
* According to Web MD, the AJRCCM conducted a long-term Children's Respiratory Study in 2007 in which kids were followed from birth through age 16 and periodically tested for lung functioning. Children of mothers without asthma who were breastfed longer than four months had stronger lung functioning. But children whose moms had asthma and were breastfed beyond 4 months showed a 6 percent decrease in lung strength.
* Physicians said at the time that though this represented a significant drop in lung functioning, it was probably not enough to warrant health care providers advising asthmatic mothers to limit breastfeeding to four months to avoid risk.
* In 2011, Science Daily reported on a study in the European Respiratory Journal that showed formula-fed babies had a 50 percent more wheezing episodes than babies who were exclusively breastfed until age six months. Babies who were given supplemental foods along with breast milk had a 20 percent greater risk for wheezing.
* The ARJCCM study revisited the 2007 and the 2011 findings to look for further links between breastfeeding and asthma, particularly in children whose mothers who had the disease and breastfed. Reuters Health reports 1,500 children were tested periodically up to age 14. Parents were also surveyed about breastfeeding habits, exposure to secondhand smoke and other environmental risks.
* The tests found children who were breastfed showed greater lung volume, less air loss and better capacity to hold air. Children of mothers with asthma were able to hold more air if moms had breastfed them past age four months. Study authors said the findings weren't linked to fewer respiratory infections, but that stronger lungs meant less risk of developing asthma later.

The Android platform expanded its dominance in the U.S. smartphone market during Q4 of 2011, according to the latest ComScore report. Apple may have boosted its share of the mobile handset market with the release of the iPhone 4S, but Android?s still the clear winner in terms of OS use, powering 47.3 percent of surveyed subscribers. That?s up from 44.8 percent last year, growing by slightly more percentage points than Apple?s increase to 29.6 percent from 27.4 percent.
Google gets a bouncer to keep malware out
The rising popularity of Android?s open platform makes it the prime target for malware, and Google?s had quite a time managing mobile threats and consumer expectations around device security. Taking matters into their own hands, Google unveiled an automated system to scan Android apps for potential malware or unauthorized behavior. Codenamed Bouncer, the scanner has been a long time coming, though Hiroshi Lockheimer, vice-president of engineering for Android, said Bouncer?s been in action for months, running unnoticed in the background.
Bouncer scans apps before they even hit the Android Market, looking for known malware including spyware and Trojan horses, as well as behavior that matches malicious apps that have previously been identified. The scanner also features a simulator that runs each app as it if were on an actual Android device, observing the app for ?hidden behavior? and marking it for review if needed. Google already had the ability to re-check published apps in the Market, but Bouncer adds more analytics to the process.
More Market malware?
That historic data analysis has been a necessary tool for mobile security providers like Lookout, enabling them to go so far as to predict how and when malware could affect Android users. And the timing for Google?s Bouncer scanner couldn?t be better, as Symantec just uncovered another malicious Trojan on the Android platform. Dubbed Android.Opfake, this low-risk Trojan sends SMS texts to premium-rate numbers, racking up some serious charges on your phone bill.

NEW YORK (AP) ? As David Letterman and Howard Stern can attest, a 30-year anniversary celebration is a ripe opportunity to cringe at geeky haircuts.
Letterman marked three decades in late-night TV on Wednesday on CBS by bringing Stern, one of his favorite guests, onto his "Late Show." They congratulated each other on age improving their looks.
Then Letterman proved it, displaying a picture of them from when Stern first appeared on the then-NBC show in May 1984. Letterman had a bushy head of hair. Stern had a mustache.
Letterman said about Stern's old picture: "It looks like a guy who was on to talk about a career of writing bad checks."
Stern advised burning the picture but recalled how grateful he had been for the invite.
"Back then, the fact that you asked me to be on a national television show was mind-blowing to me," he said.
Letterman also brought some of his long-time employees onstage to present the "Top Ten Things Staffers Would Like to Say to Dave on his 30th Anniversary in Late Night."
One of the cleanest, and most succinct, entries came from veteran executive producer Rob Burnett: "You're incompetent."
The "Late Show with David Letterman" airs weeknights at 11:35 p.m. Eastern time.
