The company today announced that it will be offering its Watson real-time speech-to-text software to developers as APIs aimed at a number of different application types -- things like web search, question and answer apps and anything that uses AT&T's U-Verse TV services. A number of additional varieties are also in the works, including gaming and social media. Check out a cheery informational video after the break.

Eyes-on Brytewerks Model One high-def projector and HTPC combo

Image

Back in January, we got our first glimpse of BryteWerks' Model One projector, albeit in render form only. Well, today at DEMO, we finally saw the thing in person and uncovered a bit more info about its innards. It still pumps out 11,000 lumens and throws images on the wall in 1920 x 1200 resolution, but it turns out to have a range of Intel silicon at its disposal: everything from a humble 1.6GHz Atom up to a 3.6GHZ Core i7. There are also multiple storage options, as the Model One comes with an Intel 320 SSD (60 or 120GB) -- where the OS resides to ensure super fast boot times -- and up to a 2TB HDD, so you have plenty of room for all your media. Speaking of the OS, it turns out the projector/HTPC has two: a customized version of XBMC and Windows 7, plus a custom GUI (currently in development) to make calibrating the projector dead simple. Because the projector's 1200-watt metal halide bulb generates so much heat, the internal chassis is built of aluminum and houses the components into four individually cooled chambers. That way, all the PC parts can stay cool on the bottom even while the projector's running full bore.

We got to see a hand-built prototype in person, and the Model One strikes an imposing, if elegant figure. It's roughly a foot and a half square cube, with a black brushed metal exterior devoid of any branding or other ornamentation, save for the silver ring around the lens. The power, HDMI, Gigabit Ethernet, USB 3.0 and four RCA connections are situated in the black plastic feet to keep cord clutter to a minimum, and the lens up front is magnetically attached to make swapping it out a simple affair. We got to speak with its creator, Justin Evans, about the genesis of the device, and he informed us that he's but a humble filmmaker who's trying to help out independent theaters, film festivals, filmmakers, and consumers. His goal was to create a projector that's both easy to use and cheap as chips (comparatively speaking) to enable film editing on the big screen and make high quality movie projection available to the masses. Given that the Model One is set to start shipping in six to eight weeks at an asking price of $2999, we'd say he's hit the mark -- assuming the image quality is as good as he says it is, and the build quality of the production model's up to snuff, of course. Here's hoping we get to see the thing in action sometime soon.

Researchers out faux product review groups with a lot of math and some help from Google

Google sponsors research that outs faux product review groups, calculates 'spamicity' and more

Ever consulted a crowdsourced review for a product or service before committing your hard-earned funds to the cause? Have you wondered how legit the opinions you read really are? Well, it seems that help is on the way to uncover paid opinion spamming and KIRF reviews. Researchers at the University of Illinois at Chicago have released detailed calculations in the report Spotting Fake Reviewer Groups in Consumer Reviews -- an effort aided by a Google Faculty Research Award. Exactly how does this work, you ask? Using the GSRank (Group Spam Rank) algorithm, behaviors of both individuals and a group as a whole are used to gather data on the suspected spammers.

Factors such as content similarity, reviewing products early (to be most effective), ratio of the group size to total reviewers and the number of products the group has been in cahoots on are a few bits of data that go into the analysis. The report states, "Experimental results showed that GSRank significantly outperformed the state-of-the-art supervised classification, regression, and learning to rank algorithms." Here's to hoping this research gets wrapped into a nice software application, but for now, review mods may want to brush up on their advanced math skills. If you're curious about the full explanation, hit the source link for the full-text PDF.

Cleaning Up The Registry With Software

If you?re looking to clean up the registry with software then the best thing that you could possibly do is to clean it out with a registry cleaner.? The best registry cleaner is one that will help you to quickly and easily clean out your computer and get it running faster again ? but in a safe and effective way.? You really should do some research on how to clean out your computer and get it running faster again, and which registry cleaner type programs are the best.? I suggest to most people that they check out RegCure, a great program for this.

Dr. Lester Breslow dies at 97; UCLA dean was 'Mr. Public Health'

Dr. Lester Breslow, the UCLA researcher who became known as "Mr. Public Health" because of his research emphasizing the beneficial effects of avoiding certain behaviors, such as smoking, overeating and failing to exercise regularly, has died. He was 97.

Breslow, a former director of the California Department of Public Health and dean of UCLA's Fielding School of Public Health, died Monday at his home in Los Angeles, the university announced.

Breslow played a key role in medicine's transition from an emphasis on simply treating disease to a much broader effort to prevent it. Medicine focused "almost exclusively on communicable diseases when I started" in the 1940s, he recently recalled. "I felt public health needed a broader vision."

He really was "a legend" because his influence "has persisted for such a long time ? seven decades," said Dr. Linda Rosenstock, the current dean of the school. "In terms of understanding the ability to prevent chronic disease through exercise, diet and [not] smoking, he is the single human being that is given the most credit."

Most physicians today would recognize that it is just as important to prevent disease, particularly diabetes, heart conditions and other chronic illnesses, as it is to treat them. But when Breslow began his work, his concerns were met with skepticism and outright disdain.

In his initial interview to join the California public health department, he was told, he said, "to take his crazy ideas back to Minnesota and try them there."

Only the intervention of a friend brought him into the agency. And it was there that he carried out what he and others consider his greatest accomplishment, the Alameda County Human Population Laboratory.

Beginning in 1959, Breslow and his colleagues enrolled about 7,000 residents of the county in a study to determine whether and how well they adhered to what he identified as seven habits of healthy living. Six of the habits had been identified by previous research: exercising regularly; getting regular sleep; not smoking; drinking moderately or not at all; eating regular meals and not snacking in between; and maintaining a normal weight.

The seventh, eating a regular breakfast, was simply an educated guess, he admitted later.

The results were dramatic. The team reported in the early 1970s that a 45-year-old who adhered to at least six of the seven habits had a life expectancy 11 years longer than that of peers who followed fewer than four. A 60-year-old who followed all seven of the habits was as healthy as a 30-year-old who followed two or less.

"I'd never seen such a systematic, positive, strong finding," Breslow said. "The results were so astonishing that I didn't believe it" at first. "I thought my colleagues were playing a joke on me."

Even among those who did not die, the effects of neglecting good health could be devastating. In a 1993 study co-authored with his son Norman, a statistician at the University of Washington, he reported that those who had six or seven of the poor health habits in 1965 were twice as likely as their neighbors with no more than two of the bad habits to be disabled 10 years later.

Among participants with one or no poor habits, the researchers found 12.2% were disabled 10 years later. Among those with two or three poor health habits, 14.1% were disabled, while 18.7% of those with four or more were disabled.

As a youth in North Dakota, Breslow had tried smoking corn silk in corncob pipes and had even experimented with cigarettes, but found that they irritated his throat. He later concluded that smoking was a major health risk and initiated several studies while he was head of the public health department. Three of those studies linking smoking to lung cancer and other diseases were cited in the U.S. surgeon general's landmark 1964 report on smoking.

Lester Breslow was born March 17, 1915, in Bismarck, N.D., the son of a pharmacist. He developed a severe stammer, but a friendly nurse encouraged him to read aloud and conduct other exercises to improve his speech. By high school, he was able to join the debate team and develop a speaking ability that served him well most of his life.

He received a bachelor's degree in psychology from the University of Minnesota in 1935 and his medical degree in 1938. But his experiences in a mental hospital in Rochester, Minn., soured him on the profession and he turned his interests to public health, receiving a master's in 1941.

In 1943, he volunteered for the U.S. Army Medical Corps and received training in tropical diseases. Posted in San Francisco, he was responsible for ensuring that no communicable diseases were brought into the city by returning military personnel. He later transferred to the Army's 7th Infantry Division in the Philippines, where he identified an epidemic of the parasitic disease schistosomiasis, and then to Okinawa.

In 1946, he joined the California public health department, becoming chief of the bureau of chronic diseases and, ultimately, head of the department.

He was active in the creation of the state's Medi-Cal program, promoted screening for the genetic disorder phenylketonuria among newborns and campaigned against smog, measles and unnecessary noise.

Breslow also started the state's Tumor Registry, which has been instrumental in hundreds of studies of environmental and behavioral effects on cancer.

In 1968, he left state service to join UCLA, where he remained for the rest of his career. He served as dean of the School of Public Health from 1972 to 1980.

In 1952, he served as director of President Truman's Commission on Health Needs of the Nation and subsequently served on a variety of other commissions and advisory boards. A past president of the American Public Health Assn., he also established and was the first editor of the Encyclopedia of Public Health.

Breslow followed his own prescriptions, walking regularly and practicing moderation in all his activities. He cleared rocks from the hillside above his Bel-Air home to create a fruit and vegetable garden that he tended regularly, keeping precise records of all that he harvested.

He married the former Alice Philp in 1939 and they had three sons before divorcing. In 1967, he married Devra Miller.

He is survived by his wife; sons Norman, Jack and Stephen; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Maugh is a former medical writer for The Times.

Facebook passwords: why companies don?t use them to see your posts

Several states are considering laws to bar companies form asking for applicants? social media passwords. But the social-media world is easily mined even without passwords, experts say.?

From Connecticut to California, concern over a rise in employer demands for access to prospective employee?s social media logins and passwords is leading lawmakers to take action.

There is pending legislation in at least five states ? including Minnesota, Illinois, California, and Massachusetts ? and the Maryland legislature just passed its own version of a bill prohibiting the practice.

But as this groundswell grows, questions are rising about whether laws will actually stop employers from seeking out digital information in an increasingly digital age.

?There is a legitimate and growing concern about privacy on the Internet,? says Katharine Parker of Proskauer Employment Law Counseling & Training Group in New York, who advises employers on hiring practices and other HR issues. ?Is there any privacy on the Internet, should there be, and what laws are needed to regulate it are all questions that are just now being asked.?

Indeed, many experts say that companies do not need to ask for Facebook passwords to get information on applicants or employees. The notion that privacy settings make things on Facebook private ?is not necessarily accurate,? says Ms. Parker.

?Even if you have a lot of privacy settings on Facebook, it?s not private if you have lots of friends,? she says.

There are many ways to get information from applicants? social media without asking for their password, says Kabrina Krebel Chang, assistant professor of business law at Boston University?s School of Management.

?In many cases, the applicant is Facebook friends with someone already at the workplace,? she notes via e-mail.

There is nothing to stop that friend from showing others in the company the Facebook page. ?If there are no direct Facebook friends, many applicants are ?friends? of other pages or have liked other pages such as alma maters, interest groups, products, etc.,? Ms. Chang adds.

Human resources departments will simply switch to sending ?friend requests? to applicants and presenting this view of the individual during the interview process, says Charles Palmer, executive director of the Center for Advanced Entertainment & Learning Technologies at Harrisburg University of Science and Technology in Pennsylvania.

?It?s a little less overt and completely legal,? he says via e-mail, adding that he expects ?to see more investment into ?social forensics? to help weed out the applicant pool.?

The main thing for potential ? and current ? employees to remember is that any information that can be accessed on a computer is potentially going to be used in a hiring process, says Deborah Sweeny, CEO of MyCorporation.com.

Most people with time and the right knowledge and technology ?can access information that?s been posted online, even if it?s been posted to a social media profile that?s been made private,? she says via e-mail. Both employees and employers need to realize that anything they put online, could end up being public, she adds.

For these reasons, some experts think it is not only unnecessary but unwise for companies to ask for social media passwords.

?Once you ask for this kind of access, then you are on notice for anything that you might find,? says Todd Taylor, an attorney with Moore & Van Allen who specializes in communication technology. ?I would advise against going after information that isn?t already public for the simple reason that if you see something and you don?t act on it, you have the potential issue of a negligent hire down the road.?

Self Improvement is an Addictive Habit

Mountain with Snow

If there were self-improvers anonymous meetings I would be a permanent attendee for I am addicted to personal development. Now that I have started down this path I find that I cannot help but push myself to achieve more and improve more. One of my main hobbies has become the act of continually seeking to improve my life and the lives of those around me.

I have noticed that other serial self-improvers ?suffer? the same consequences, perpetually improving their lives and achieving more and more success as they do so. Through this observation, and my own experience, I have made a simple conclusion: self improvement is an addictive habit.

Self Improvement is an addictive habit

Addictions are generally bad things. The word itself has a strong negative connotation and the usage generally implies a lack of control and self-awareness. But not all addictions are bad.

Positive things with positive outcomes can also be addictive. Productivity, achievement and success all trigger a ?natural high?, a mental state of supreme happiness, awareness, and confidence. Self improvement just happens to ticks all these boxes.

The result of self improvement is a positive increase in all the above areas and so much more. It creates a positive aura, one that attracts more positivity and success, and it stimulates our mind and body and encourages us to start operating at a higher level. This is what makes it so addictive.

A friend of mine actually inspired this article when we were talking about home improvement. Here is his direct quote, and proof that once you start improving something, your mind begins to open up to see other opportunities:

Installing a new wardrobe was a bad idea?I now want to do all the other stuff on my To Do list. I?d kind of forgotten about all the things, but now we?ve started I?m remembering them all and when I walk around the house now all I see is things that need improving.

The beauty of self improvement is that it is never ending. There is always something else that can be learned and adapted to our lives. There are always new experiences, new people, and new challenges presented in our lives, and this is the only dangerous aspect of being addicted to self improvement ? it easy to forget that there is no specific end goal in mind and that the simple act of self improvement is what provides happiness. This is summed up perfectly in the oft-quoted line by Souza:

Happiness is the journey, not the destination.

So for those just starting down the self improvement path, be mindful that it is the actual deed of self improvement that provides us with the happiness ? the feeling of adding to our skills and knowledge, of making ourselves a better person, and of achieving more success. Do not get too hung up on thinking about the future and where you are going, but rather on living (and improving) in the present moment.

Or You Could Stagnate?

The alternative to this wonderful addiction called self improvement is that of stagnating. By stagnating I mean making the decision (conscious or not) to stay exactly as you are right now.

If you are not willing to challenge yourself, to grow, and to improve then what are you doing? Are you saying there is nothing in your life that needs changing? Are you saying that you couldn?t be happier?

If you can truly answer yes to those questions (and I highly doubt that you can) then I have one more question: is there nothing more that you can do in your life that could help improve the life of others?

Even if you had everything you ever wanted, if you really were living your perfect life, I believe that you could still find even more happiness simply by helping others. And isn?t the ability to sacrifice and be charitable, just one of the results of self improvement? See what I did there?

There is never a valid reason to stagnate in your life but, sadly, I see this as the default stance more and more people are taking. They are ?giving up? and just accepting a life of mediocrity, anger, and unhappiness instead of trying to make a change. It doesn?t take much. All you need to do is actually make a start.

Start Improving Today

I know that self improvement is an addictive habit because I am experiencing it first hand, but for those first-timers, and those who are trying to break out of their habit of stagnation, it can feel almost impossible to start. But don?t worry, it?s not impossible. You just need to start small.

Try being grateful for one thing, or giving a fresh compliment to someone, every day. Try some positive affirmations before you leave the home or just focus on observing your own thought patterns and living in the moment. It doesn?t matter what you do, just as long as you do something!

Once you start down the path of improvement it will become near impossible to stop. The first time you work on self improvement is like the first snowflake that causes the avalanche ? pretty soon the desire to improve is raging and the amount of improvement you seek is like a torrent of snow tumbling down a mountain.

But unlike the snow avalanche, this metaphorical one is not destructive. It is actually quite the opposite. Imagine an avalanche that only removed rubbish, beautified the landscape, and made the mountain an even more amazing place than it already was. That is what the avalanche of self improvement does in your life ? it is a constant force that pushes away the negativity and stimulates the development of positivity. All it needs is that one snowflake to start it off?

Go forth and seek out self improvement. Your happiness depends on it.

Study: Obamacare will raise deficit

The study, by a conservative economist, is due to be release Tuesday, and says that the deficit will increase by $340 billion due to the president's signature health care law.

Reigniting a debate about the bottom line for President Barack Obama's health care law, a leading conservative economist estimates in a study to be released Tuesday that the overhaul will add at least $340 billion to the deficit, not reduce it.

Charles Blahous, who serves as public trustee overseeing Medicare and Social Security finances, also suggested that federal accounting practices have obscured the true fiscal impact of the controversial legislation, the fate of which is now in the hands of the Supreme Court.

RECOMMENDED:?How much do you know about health-care reform? Take our Quiz!

Officially, the health care law is still projected to help reduce government red ink. The Congressional Budget Office, the government's non-partisan fiscal umpire, said in an estimate last year that repealing the law actually would increase deficits by $210 billion from 2012-2021.

The CBO, however, has not updated that projection. If $210 billion sounds like a big cushion, it's not. The government has recently been running annual deficits in the $1 trillion range.

Neither the budget office nor the White House had any immediate reaction late Monday to the new estimates.

"Taken as a whole, the enactment of the (health care law) has substantially worsened a dire federal fiscal outlook," Blahous wrote in his 52-page analysis, released by George Mason University's Mercatus Center. "The (law) both increases a federal commitment to health care spending that was already unsustainable under prior law and would exacerbate projected federal deficits relative to prior law."

The law expands health insurance coverage to more than 30 million people now uninsured, paying for it with a mix of Medicare cuts and new taxes and fees.

Blahous cited a number of factors for his conclusion:

? The health care's law deficit cushion has been reduced by more than $80 billion because of the administration's decision not to move forward with a new long-term care insurance program that was part of the legislation. The Community Living Assistance Services and Supports program raised money in the short turn, but would have turned into a fiscal drain over the years.

? The cost of health insurance subsidies for millions of low-income and middle-class uninsured people could turn out to be higher than forecast, particularly if employers scale back their own coverage.

? Various cost control measures, including a tax on high-end insurance plans that doesn't kick in until 2018, could deliver less than expected.

The decision to use Medicare cuts to finance the expansion of coverage for the uninsured will only make matters worse, Blahous said. The money from the Medicare savings will have been spent, and lawmakers will have to find additional cuts or revenues to forestall that program's insolvency.

Under federal accounting rules, the Medicare cuts are also credited as savings to that program's trust fund. But the CBO and Medicare's own economic estimators already said the government can't spend the same money twice.

RECOMMENDED:?How much do you know about health-care reform? Take our Quiz!

Blahous served in the George W. Bush White House from 2001-2009, rising to deputy director of the National Economic Council. He currently is a senior research fellow at the Mercatus Center.

His study was first reported late Monday by The Washington Post.

Emotional Readiness ? How to Tell If He's Ready to Commit ...

April 9, 2012

At my age, more and more of my friends are getting into committed relationships. Some are getting married and, scarier still, having children. My observation is that this trend tends to excite all of my female friends, while simultaneously terrifying the guys. Discussions of ?Who?s next?? pop up at baby showers and wedding receptions, and the same question resonates at the back of my own mind when lying next to my girlfriend at night.

First of all, I?m 24. Historically, a guy my age would have been married for a couple years by now and would have spawned a small family. However, in the wonderful age we live in, starting a family can be delayed all the way into your balding years. My dad?s almost fifty, has just been remarried, and is trying to have more kids. The bracket of socially acceptable ages for matrimonial eligibility is maturing. This, in my books, is good news. I come from a sexually chaotic age demographic. And being a college graduate, I?m leaving behind a world of experimentation, freedom, and emotional ignorance. The world of the college male is an exciting, unrealistic one, filled with drunken, misguided, and often hilarious experiences. Ladies, if you?re involved with a college or university-bound guy, be prepared for a rough ride. In my experience, no relationships that start before college survive the first year. However, if you are with a guy after college, I find that your odds are drastically improved. Your man has his eyes on new prizes, and his entire value system has evolved (as far as you?re concerned ? for the better). Personally, I went from being concerned exclusively with my guitar and traveling to expanding my freelance design business and creating a professional name for myself.

Which value system, as a woman, would you prefer? The trick is to look less at the man himself, and more at what he?s looking for in his life. Your clues for emotional readiness will stem from his observed maturity, and where he?s going with his life. Be as objective as possible in your analysis. If he?s still playing Halo five nights a week and working as a pizza delivery boy, he?s not taking himself very seriously. So what makes you think he?ll take you seriously?

To summarize, there?s a lot to be said for the end of school. I?ve found that male emotional readiness matures more rapidly after college, once new life goals have taken root. A great indicator of emotional sincerity is the man?s occupation. If he?s taking his job seriously, he will also be more likely to take you seriously.

Hair Loss ? Factors And Cures For Hair Loss :Fitness And Health ...

Wednesday, April 4th, 2012 at 12:38 pm ?

The investigation for organic and natural choices to treat hair thinning targets to discover choices for conventional pharmacological choices, simply because these commonly have significant side effects. One of these choices is homeopathy ? it might be termed as the organic and natural route because this medicinal system employs distillations of organic compounds. Homeopathy has many treatment modes for addressing hair thinning. A skilled homeopath?s arsenal of solutions comprises fluoric acid, lycopodium, kali carbonicum, kali sulphuricum, natrum mur, phosphorus, selenium and tissue salts.

Unless you were scheming to make a fashion declaration ? think David Beckham or Sinead O?Connor ? you probably wouldn?t be too thrilled with hair thinning. In Traditional western society, hair thinning ? mainly male pattern hair thinning ? is fodder for jokes, unless the hair thinning is a result of chemotherapy or other clinical treatment plans. If you?re suffering from situational baldness or male/female pattern baldness, you may laugh about it among your friends. Chances are, then again, that you?re crying about it in secrecy. But by no means are you all alone. Happily, you could possibly find many healthy therapies to relieve hair thinning and the personal shame that comes from it.

In spite of this, if you are not pleased to go for the homeopathic choice, you might as well go for another organic and natural option: the all organic and natural Provillus hair treatment. The many reviews of Provillus show that this effectual remedy only comprises organic and natural constituents that might give the suitable hair care. Additionally, you will never have to handle annoying side effects, like skin rashes or irritations.

So what is Provillus in actual fact? It is a organic and natural hair thinning treatment, specifically created for men and females individually. Together withhair thinning, ? Provillus? works best for the sake of healthy, nicely toned, and dandruff free hair. The formulation of Provillus is revealed after many, many years of research in the direction of highly qualified and professional group.

You might uncover all the essential info by looking at a consumer Provillus review, given that the users of this fantastic remedy are the ones that might give you the right facts. As any good review will explain, all the constituents in Provillus are FDA approved, which usually means they are safe for human consumption and are proven to be effectual. Provillus is in two forms, one for men and one for females.

There are many highly effectual treatments for female hair thinning available currently. The fact is, there are both prescription and organic and natural choices. Frequently, a few modifications in lifestyle (like eating habits, personal hygiene and sleep regulation) might bring about dramatic modifications in female hair thinning. Use Provillus, make a few modifications in your standard of living and you will undoubtedly get the right outcomes!

Interested In Buying Real Estate In The Toronto Market ...

One or two years gone, there were not as many selections when it came to purchasing a home as there are today. Today, the home market is saturated with houses up for sale. Perfect houses can be discovered on every block, in every neighbourhood. And homes are being sold for a small part of what they are worth.

It is definitely time to buy a home. But the huge amount of options available can make it tricky to select which home to purchase. You can't possibly view all the homes that are for sale. Regardless of whether you narrowed your search to a tiny area, you'd still be overwhelmed by all the options available. To ensure you make an offer on the house that's perfect for you, you need to make a short list.

First and foremost, you ought to have a good idea of where you would like to live. If you are uncertain which neighbourhoods are the best, ask. Study up on the school systems in your neighborhood and work out where property values are rising most speedily. The info you gather will help you in deciding which locale to look in.

Before you contact an agent about purchasing property in Toronto, you want to scan all of your options. Free home guides and the web are an excellent spot to start. Look at all the listings in the area where you wish to settle. Get an understanding of what?s out there and how much houses are selling for.

Make a list of all the things you want in a place. Be sure to break your list down into ?must haves? and ?wants.? If you need 3 bedrooms, do not look at houses that are less than three bedrooms. If you would like to have a pool, put homes with a pool on top of your list but do not limit your list to such houses.

After you have an inventory of chances, drive by all of the homes that you have on your list. If you do not like what you see when you drive by a particular piece of real estate in Toronto, mark it off your list. Culling your list in this fashion will stop you from viewing lots of houses that you do not want to see. It'll save a little time, and it'll save your agent time.

After you have created a short list, you can start viewing houses. Set up a few appointments to see homes on the same day. Avoid spreading your viewings out through the week as this could mess around. Be certain to tell your agent what you like and do not like about the homes you see. They may be able to help adjust your short list so you avoid seeing homes with similar negative aspects.

If you're in the act of deciding whether to take a position in real estate or not you need to definitely consult a pro. There are many opportunities on the market and you might be missing out. Visit and read the Toronto real estate blog and learn all about the reasons explaining why living in Toronto is great.

UN in Haiti sees jump in cholera cases

(AP) ? Haiti is seeing a jump in the number of cholera cases as the Caribbean nation heads into the annual rainy season, a United Nations humanitarian agency said Tuesday.

The U.N.'s Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs said in a monthly bulletin that the new cholera cases were found in the western and northern parts of the country and that Haitian health officials recorded 77 new cases a day for the whole country in early March, when the rains began.

Medical teams have been deployed to stem the spread of cholera but their effectiveness has been hampered in part by little coordination and an absence of salaries paid to people working in cholera treatment centers run by Haitian authorities, the U.N. bulletin said.

The day-to-day operations of the Haitian government have been largely been put on hold after Prime Minister Garry Conille suddenly resigned in February because of clashes with President Michel Martelly. Martelly named his foreign affairs minister, Laurent Lamothe, as his next pick but it's unclear when Parliament will vote on Lamothe's candidacy.

The new cholera cases come after a steady decline since June of last year when aid workers saw peaks of more than 1,000 cases on certain days.

The Boston-based group Partners in Health said it saw the number of cholera cases nearly triple from almost 19,000 in April 2011 to more than 50,000 two months later.

The same group wants to introduce a cholera vaccine to Haiti but its distribution is on hold as an ethics committee studies the program.

The disease, now the largest cholera outbreak in the world, has killed more than 7,000 people and sickened another 530,000, health officials say. The disease was likely introduced by a U.N. peacekeeping unit from Nepal, where the disease is endemic, several months after the January 2010 earthquake.

Cholera is caused by a bacteria found in contaminated water or food, and can kill people within hours through dehydration. It is easily treatable if caught in time.
