Church collecting items for Operation Christmas Child

MOUNT HEALTHY ?

Things some children may take for granted, such as a toothbrush or a small toy, are being packed up and shipped out to less fortunate kids around the world.

It's all part of Operation Christmas Child at First Baptist Church in Mt. Healthy.

"Each year, we try to grow the number of relays in the region. And if we make it more convenient, for people to have a place to take their shoeboxes, overall we gain more shoeboxes," organizer Daryl Davis said.

Inside these shoeboxes are letters, toys, and toiletries. Donors also have the option of tracking the box to find out exactly where it'll end up. Volunteers say it's a labor of love.

"It takes a lot of people's time and effort to make this happen, but it always comes together no matter what, so it's always really fun," volunteer Chloe Payne said.

Organizers say the attention to detail makes sure no stone is left unturned, and no child is left unloved.

"There are booklets put in each gift box, for each country, for each child, in their native language," volunteer Karen Irvin said.

After collecting 26,000 boxes last year, the church hopes to top 30,000 this year.

?It just makes you feel good to be able to give, and that's what I want to do, is give," Irwin said.

?Children will open these boxes, they'll see and they'll hear about the love of Jesus Christ, and they'll just enjoy a little bit of Christmas from here in Cincinnati," Pastor Fran Transcritti said.
